The Upstairs Gallery was temporarily housed in Totara Ave New Lynn while the Lopdell Precinct was being upgraded in Titirangi. This was a great opportunity for us to be involved in several workshops and exhibitions. We were commissioned to create some figures, all looking toward the gallery to promote their annual members exhibition. With sponsorship from Henkell, who provided us with all the cellotape, we created 5 figures for display: A business man with hat, sunglasses and briefcase holding the gallery flier, looking toward the gallery, a girl with a hula hoop and boy with a ball pointing toward the gallery, and a boy on a scooter. The technique is to 'mould' small parts of the body at a time and assemble. For example the cellotape is wrapped around the arm, with the sticky side up, for the first layer, then subsequent layers the other way up. This forms a skin which is cut off the body and re-taped up. when all body parts are made the figure is pieced together to complete the form. This technique creates a really good 'likeness' to the model.
